Contractions started at around 6pm on December 30th. I waited for a few hours to see if they would go away but...at 10:30pm, Steph and i headed to the hospital thinking htey would check me out and send me home. As they say "It is better to be safe than sorry". I found myself at McMaster, hooked up to the fetal monitor for a couple of hours when contractions became regular and stronger. They took blood and urine but determined that I had no infection and therefore, had to go to plan B.. At approximately 4:30am they gave me an IV and my first shot of Celestone while Brad drove Stephie home. Celestone is the steriod which helps premature babies lungs develop in the case of birth. You need 2 shots within 24 hours of each other and they take 48 hours to take effect.
I was admitted to Labour and Delivery at around 6:30am and monitored. Since the contraction had not stopped, the doctors ordered Adalat... a blood pressure medication used in trying to stop premature labour. I got 4 pills over an hour. I had a full ultrasound where they ensured me that the baby was healthy and big and that my uterus was long and closed. By the afternoon, contractions had settled but the doctors did not want to releasse me until they knew for sure I was in the clear. Therefore, I brought in 2008 in the hospital!!!
Brad brought Hadley by for supper and later returned with 2 wine glasses and some Gingerale. He also brought along some beautiful roses sent by his family and a card that made me weepy.
I got my second shot of Celestone at 5am and a visit frpm the doctor at 7:15am. Dr. Smith checked me out and released me by 8am and I was home free. She let me know that this would probably continue throughout the remainder of this pregnancy and that if things got worse again to head to the hospital.
How is that for scary???
